Manufacturing Information Education through MES
What is MES?
Manufacturing Execution System
- It is a system that supports planning, instruction, monitoring, and data management at the manufacturing site level.
- Based on the production control (mid to long-term plans), it creates the factory’s daily production planning⇒instruction⇒actual results.
- The MES manages information essential for manufacturing in order to create instructional information.
- For MES to develop or revise plans, actual results information corresponding to the instructions is essential.
⇒ The BOM (Bill of Materials) is essential for the operation of the MES.
Creating this BOM is a process of systematizing the company’s manufacturing,
and can be expected to have the effect of turning tacit knowledge into formal knowledge.
⇒ By learning MES, students can develop a systematic understanding of information
related to manufacturing and the ability to gain a bird’s eye view of the manufacturing site.
Factory operating systems (MES) are also a way to take advantage of the IoT.

Main functions of MES
- BOM management
- Engineering BOM … Systematic management of the individual parts that make up a product. Each parts has its own design information.
- Equipments BOM … Systematic management of the capabilities of machines, tools, jigs, conveyors, etc. as components of factory production equipment.
- Manufacturing BOM … Systematic management of individual product (part) manufacturing recipes by breaking them down into processes.
- MES functions
- Automatic creation of manufacturing plans (small-term plans) based on production plans (mid-term plans)
- Manual editing of the manufacturing plan is also possible on the gantt chart screen.
- Issuance of manufacturing instructions. Drawings and other related documents necessary for setup are also output.
- Automatic acquisition of actual results data from equipment
- Visualizing the manufacturing process
- Able to search manufacturing history and export search results as a file

Manufacturing planning exercise using MES and virtual equipments
Verification of the validity of the manufacturing plan
- Using non-quantified information such as the manufacturing capacity of virtual production facilities and setup work as disturbances, the participants will be trained to reconcile the schedule (instructions) with the actual results and extract improvements to improve productivity.
- Learn the essentials of registering information to the BOM by registering the specifications of the virtual equipments to the BOM in the MES (especially the manufacturing BOM).
Manufacturing planning exercise using MES and small desktop equipments
Verification using simulated equipments
- Validation of the plan and tracking exercise with actual signals acquisition using small simulated equipments
- Verification of inter-equipment transfer time, standby time, setup time, etc. in a multi-process system
- Verification of the position and timing of the input (acquisition) of actual results.
